It's framed as a Trump thing but this aligns perfectly with standard patriarchal thinking. Women are used as buffers for all sorts of male misbehaviour and violence, and wives being expected to soak up their husband's abuse while the severity gets downplayed is but one example of this.
He knows he can get away with saying it, especially considering the environment he said it in.
One doesn't typically call the cops in unless they think they're about to die. Infer from this fact what you will about the goal of the president's statement.
